5 Mistakes Should be Avoided as a Heat Press Freshman

Don’t improvise the instruction

Time, temperature and pressure are the three essential factors affecting the finished product of DIY. Take time to consider the material you’re applying to when you order your transfer machines. To check the pressure, for example, you can visually check the lower platen by placing dollar bills at each corner of the heat press, lock it down and try to remove each piece while the machine is locked down. Ensure that the pressure in every corner is balanced before you press a t-shirt, tumbler, cap, shoes and more. If there is too much or insufficient pressure in some places and it is unavoidable, try to avoid it during heat press. Otherwise, transfer pillow and pad are important accessory to that can help novice to adjust the pressure properly. If you find it difficult to pressurize when using handle of press, besides the factors of physical strength, maybe you can consider adjusting the placement of the machine relatively, so as to bring the most efficient DIY works in the most comfortable way.

Don’t overuse relevant accessories (Transfer pillow+cover sheet)

When you are printing a place that has been printed, it is indispensable to use a high-quality cover sheet. At the same time, when pressing is carried out on the surface of the flashing object, the cover sheet can effectively avoid the adverse effects caused by static electricity, so that the heat press transfer designs finally present the best effect. However, improper overuse of auxiliary printing tools can sometimes lead to counterproductive results. Some auxiliary tools may have the function of heat insulation or pressure suppression; in that case, as stated in first section, temperature and pressure are the two most critical factors affecting the finished product. Excessive use of auxiliary tools may cause the loss of temperature and pressure. Therefore, before starting each printing, think about the necessary items and remember not to overuse auxiliary tools. Never, ever, ever.

Don’t clean up your heat press improperly (keep your press clean)

Your heat press needs a check-up every few months. Be gentle especially when cleaning up the upper platen because the upper platen is the main heating panel of a heat transfer machine. If your upper platen is stained with dirt, please do not use the sharp blade to clean dirt against the damage of non-stick paint-coat of the upper platen. Normally, we recommend using mechanics non-abrasive hand cleaner, household iron cleaner or mild soap and water to clean.

Don’t forget to test for fabric

Test your fabric before you order your transfer. You may have to adjust placement if there are certain areas that scorch. The melting temperature of nylon and polypropylene is low, so they are highly sensitive to heat. If they are not adjusted to the appropriate temperature during operation, they are also prone to adverse consequences. Nevertheless, most of the fabrics on the market are blended materials, so it is difficult for us to accurately judge the temperature suitable for them. Therefore, it is very necessary to use some fabrics for testing in advance, know the melting area in advance, and then purchase or produce in batch. After all, no one wants to see that part of their fabrics melt and affect the overall sense of beauty.

        Don’t be distracted

In order to increase the efficiency, you may want to handle multiple tasks at the same time especially in the peak season when several kinds of order are pouring in. Whether it’s a call or a sudden visitor without an appointment, it can be a distraction when you are pressing. Perhaps, there will always be some unexpected things in life, but distraction will lead to a sharp rise in the error rate. We may not be able to completely avoid the interference of external factors, but we can effectively reduce the occurrence of such things. For instance, you can choose a quiet room as an independent workshop, arrange other issues as properly as possible, and then concentrate on your shirt press work.

I hope you will never make the mistakes mentioned in this article and experience the consequences of bad accidents. But if these common mistakes do happen, don't like a duck in a thunderstorm and lose your heart. You're not the only one. As long as we carefully learn the lessons from the mistakes and summarize the causes of mistakes, we will grow up naturally because practices make perfect. Hope us can find our own flash point on the journey of heat pressing.
